An “Acrostic Poem” is another kind of poem that writers use to help them share their ideas with others with just the right words.

This kind of poem uses each letter of an important idea as the beginning of each line of a poem.

Here is an example of an acrostic poem about friends. Read it together with your child. Notice how the author uses each letter of the word friends to begin using the very best words to describe her friends.

F- Friends are precious gifts
R- Rare and hard to find
I- Invisible when life is good
E- Ever near when your sun doesn’t shine
N- Nothing is ever too much
D- Distance never too far
S- Standing by your side when your dreams have passed you by.

Look back with your child at their “heart map” for ideas of people, places and things that are important to them. Help your child to brainstorm ideas about that topic using each letter of the word.

Help them to write an acrostic poem about one of the ideas they are taking care of. Who would they like to share their poem with?
