Yesterday, you looked at a picture of children and took turns telling the story of what the moment in the photo might be. Writers are often inspired, and find and collect ideas from photographs of real events.

Families:

Enjoy looking at some photographs of events in your family’s life with your child. Perhaps you have some photos in an album, or even on a phone or other device.

Encourage your child to choose a photo of an event that excites them, or sparks a memory for them of their experience in the moment that the photo captures.

Talk together about the moment. Some of these prompts might help your child (and you!) to tell the story of that experience.

  • What do you remember?
  • What does your child remember?
  • What did it feel like to be there?
  • What did it sound like?
  • What would you want to tell someone about it who wasn’t there?

Enjoy storytelling together. Encourage your child to write the story of the experience in the photo to share with someone. They might share the story through a poem, a song, a news article or even a play!
